religion monument for Israeli community
In the center of the Kos city near the port, the Jewish synagogue functions as a cultural center and next door is the residence of the Rabbi.
From the 2nd BC. century had appeared the Jewish community in Kos and this is evidenced by the creation of the synagogue.
Chased by the Knights Templar in the 14th century, the Jews reappeared in Kos two centuries later, after the Ottoman conquest, to be completely annihilated at Auschwitz during World War II.The current building of the synagogue was built in replacement of an older synagogue, which was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1933 with the loss of human lives.
The synagogue served the religious needs of 140 families in the Israeli community.
With the occupation of the island by the occupying German forces, all members of the community were arrested and all their property was confiscated. The black story was written on July 22, 1944. All the Jewish families from Kos and Rhodes were transported by boat stacked to Piraeus and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Finally on the island, before the village of Platani, there is a Jewish cemetery with tombstones dating from the 17th century.
