Castle of Pyli

the center of ancient local culture and commerce

The old town of Pyli is located approximately 3-4 kilometers southeast of the settlement of Pyli village and about 17 kilometers from the Kos town.

It is a byzantine settlement with a castle on the top of the hill and dominates the entire area.

According to historical reports the castle was built during the reign of the Macedonian dynasty in the Byzantine from the 9th century until the 11th.

During the fifteenth century when the knights of Saint John took over the island they maintained and reinforced the castle with the purpose to strengthen the area’s defense.

The view from the castle is impressive, you can see the nearby islands, Pserimos and Kalymnos and the coasts of Asia Minor across the sea. In the settlement, which has been characterized as the “Mystra’s of the Dodecanese”, many byzantine churches have been salvaged among which the church of Ypapanti of the 14th century with a wood-carved iconostasis and columns from a pre-existing ancient temple, as well as the temple of Taxiarches stand out.

In the mountains of Kos it stands like a watchful guard.

It’s worth noting that the founder of the holy monastery of Patmos, saint Christodoulos, originally built the monastery here, the monastery of the Kastrians, the catholic of which is preserved to this day as the church of Ypapanti or Flevariotissa (February) from the date of its celebration.
